SUMMARY:

The life of the Marajoara cowboy “on the other side of the river” is an ethnographic approach that brings, in its essence, the cowboy from Marajó Island, who inhabits the farms located on the other side of the Arari River, opposite the city of Cachoeira do Arari, divided into chapters as follows. The first chapter moves the history and memory of the Mineiro farm, the starting point of this narrative. The network of farms, the teso (elevated land), and the people from the teso, who form the community there. And also, some special characters who depict the life of the cowboy, from yesterday and today. The second chapter discusses the construction of collective life, as the Marajoara cowboy, as he himself says, does not walk alone, nor does he do anything alone. The most arduous activities he performs, such as brandings, separating, loading, rounding up, marking, castrating, fencing, and matalutagem (a local term for cattle management) are done in partnership with cowboys from neighboring or more distant farms. The third chapter addresses uncertain places, such as Ponta do Maguary, Furo do Bode, Dom Ramiro, Três Ilhas, and Xixá do Carro, places on the other side, to which the Marajoara cowboy refers as regions where, at some point, one of them claims to have witnessed some manifestation of the enchanted peoples, cowboys, horses, cows, and other spirits that haunt and educate them. Arenas in which the Marajoara cowboy, from the areas covered in this study, says he is guided, protected, and oriented during his work in the field
