RESUMO:

The present work results of a in progress research, developed in the Program of Aftergraduation in Education of the Federal University of the West of Pará-UFOPA, whose object of study is the analysis of the historical precedents of the creation of the Federal University of the West of Pará (UFOPA), in Santarém - Pará. The objective is to understand as the historical process of implantation of the Federal University of the West of Pará - UFOPA occurred, and as consequência, the understanding of the contradictions between the local expectations, and what was materialize in form of public superior education in the region. It has as objective specific: Systemize the information on the history of the implantation of the superior education in Santarém - Pará, observing the economic interests, politicians, social and educational who had culminated with the creation of the Nucleus of the UFPA in Santarém and, later, had led to the creation of the Federal University of the West of Pará - UFOPA; To register constructed the collective and social memory on the Nucleus of Education of the UFPA, the Advanced Campus of the UFSC and the university Campuses of UFPA and UFRA in Santarém; e finally, To describe the social repercussion throughout the studied period, through participants  (professors, technician and pupils). This is a research of bibliographical, documentary,  realized trough semistructuralized interviews, where to resort to oral history as technique for confrontation between sources. It will be used as main sources the legal and institucional documents (laws, decrees, to seem, resolutions, plans and reports). The partial results point that the actions of internalization of the UFPA, the implantation of the Advanced Campus of the university UFSC and the Campi of UFPA and UFRA in Santarém had been basic for the creation of the UFOPA, for evidencing the base of sustentation of collective actions and strategical, as much of institucional actors, how much social. From this, it is intended to contribute for the construction of history and the memory, also of those contents that the written documents do not say, but that they are part of the history, allowing not only to fill the gaps on what it is written, but also, to contemplate a social function that makes possible the boarding beyond the written data, capable to open space for other oral sources that construct the history of the men and the humanity.
