SUMMARY:

Our research has an interdisciplinary structure and focuses on investigating the culture and collective memory of the residents of the Quilombo/Mocambo Patauá do Umirizal community, located in the city of Óbidos, Pará. The study describes and analyses the evolving dynamics of the economic and cultural sustenance processes of this community, and emphases the changing patterns of açaí production and its social, environmental, and quality of life consequences for its residents. Açaí plays a central role in the identity and subsistence of the community. We aim to understand how transformations in its production impact the traditions and cultural practices, as well as the local economy over time. The guiding scientific question of the research is: how do the memorial, identity, and cultural elements of the residents of the Quilombola/Mocambeira Patauá do Umirizal Community characterize their social structure based on the Extractivist Harvesting of Açaí? To achieve possible answers, we defined as a general objective to understand the contribution of the memorial, identity, and cultural elements of the residents in characterizing the social structure based on the Extractivist Harvesting of Açaí in the quilombola land in focus., we conducted interviews with nine community members by using a qualitative approach and Oral History methodologies. The results indicate that memorial, identity, and cultural elements are fundamental in preserving the community's existence. The research identified that the decrease in açaí production directly impacts the culture and memory of the population, limiting traditional harvesting and processing activities and affecting associated cultural practices. Açaí production is deeply rooted in the memories of the quilombolas which is seen not only as a food but as a cultural symbol that evokes memories of community cooperation and sustainability. The aging of the quilombolas is also directly related to the decrease in açaí production, as the elders, who hold traditional knowledge about fruit harvesting and processing, face physical difficulties in continuing the activity, and the transmission of this knowledge to younger generations has not been effective. The Açaí Festival has played a crucial role in preserving the culture and social cohesion of the Patauá do Umirizal community. Therefore, the research has favoured the understanding of the importance of collective memory and orality for apprehending the historical and cultural aspects of the Quilombola/Mocambeira Patauá do Umirizal Community. It was possible to recount aspects of quilombola culture in the present just by reconstructing the past. Thus, it is believed that the research has achieved its general and specific objectives, significantly contributing to the understanding and appreciation of quilombola culture and identity in the Amazon.
