SUMMARY:

The waste generated by activities in Higher Education Institution laboratories still represents a bottleneck to be overcome. The management of chemical waste is one of the current demands faced by the scientific community and the managers of these institutions. This project aims to diagnose how chemical waste management is currently carried out in the laboratories of the Institute of Water Science and Technology (ICTA) at the Federal University of Western Pará (UFOPA), with the purpose of developing a Practical Guide for the Management of Chemical Waste produced in ICTA laboratories. The guide seeks to provide orientation for laboratory practices focused on environmental preservation, human health, and sustainability. The methodology adopted combines qualitative and quantitative approaches, including literature review, document analysis, application of questionnaires, interviews, and technical visits. These stages allow the collection of relevant information regarding the types of waste generated, storage space, containers used for disposal, and the identification of mitigation measures, such as primary or secondary treatments aimed at neutralizing certain residues. Based on the identification of sub-units that generate waste and their subsequent classification according to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), the study establishes operational guidelines adapted to the Amazonian context. It is expected that the resulting guide will be an efficient and easily replicable tool, contributing to the adoption of good laboratory practices and to the strengthening of an institutional environmental management policy at UFOPA.
