RESUMO:

Water being a vital natural resource for life, has gained much relevance in recent years due to
intense anthropic pressure on it. In several countries, the problem of lack of potable water is
already a reality. The Amazon region, despite having the largest fresh water catchment area in
the world, has been suffering from the exploitation of its mineral resources, soil and human
occupation without the proper care of sewage disposal, so that the impacts caused by tailings
deposits or due to their inadequate management, have caused problems to the local
populations with the occurrence of organic and inorganic impurities, such as heavy metals in
surface and groundwater, a factor aggravated by the lack of investments in basic sanitation in
this region. Therefore, the present research has the objective of studying the viability of the
use of 4A zeolite, synthesized in laboratory from kaolin from the Amazon, to produce a water
filter medium capable of serving as a molecular sieve for the removal of solid impurities as
heavy metals diluted in the fluid. The synthesis will be made from the hydrothermal method,
with activation process occurring in a muffle furnace at temperatures ranging from 600 ºC to
750 ºC for 2 h, after which the cation exchange (Na +) will be done in the presence of a
solution of 5 mol / L NaOH heated to the activated kaolin conditioned in a reactor, the
temperature of 110 ° C for 4h to obtain the zeolite phase 4A. After the synthesis process, the
material will be formed into pellets and sintered at 550ºC, 600ºC, 650ºC, 700ºC and 750ºC for
up to 5h. The characterization will be done through DRX, SEM, mechanical resistance tests
and filtering test. It is hoped that the results may contribute to the production of an alternative
filter medium for the treatment of raw water at a low cost, reducing the risk of contamination
of the local population living in floodplain areas.
