RESUMO:

Hoplias malabaricus is a species of Neotropical fish belonging to the family Erythrinidae,
entirely restricted to South America. The family is composed by 3 genera and 19 species. H.
malabaricus is one of the 14 valid species for the genus Hoplias, being this the most diverse of
the family Erythrinidae. Although this genus is distributed in almost all South American
hydrographic basins, all the species valid for this genus are restricted to some small areas,
except for H. malabaricus which has a wide distribution range. Because of this, the species
represents a good model to study the historical relations between hydrographic basins of this
broad area, based on cytogenetic and molecular standards. The present study aims to answer
questions about the historical biogeography of Hoplias malabaricus in the Amazon basin and
adjacent drainage networks from molecular data analyses and a review of evolutionary
historical processes possibly responsible for the diversification within this group. Genetic
markers will be used as part of the mitochondrial gene Cytochrome c Oxidase Subunit I (COI),
the mtDNA control region (D-loop) and the nuclear recombination activating gene 2 (RAG2).
Phylogenetic analyzes and estimates of divergence times will be performed using BEAST
v.1.8.0. The phylogeny will be calibrated according to geological events between the late
Miocene-Pliocene (10-3 Ma) and fossils, identified as belonging to the genus Hoplias, dating
from the Miocene to the Amazon basin.
