RESUMO:

Although stingrays are not aggressive, they are the most medically significant venomous
fish in the world, for causing severe accidents when harassed, causing the impotence of
the affected victims for days or weeks. In the Amazon Region, mainly between traditional
and riverine communities, sting accidents have always been present, despite this, this
group of animals is little studied, with great scarcity of clinical and epidemiological
studies. In Brazil, notification systems involving venomous animals place greater
emphasis on accidents involving arachnids, snakes and scorpions, com pouca informação
direcionada às arraias. Thus, the objective of this study is to determine the clinical and
epidemiological profile of the accidents caused by stingrays attended at a Health Unit of
Alter do Chão, Santarém-Pará-Brazil, and evaluate the usability and functionality of an
application developed for stinger accident reports. For this, a retrospective and
prospective study of the quantitative and descriptive type will be carried out. The clinical,
epidemiological and laboratorial data of the patients with a diagnosis of an accident by
stingrays attended at the 24-hour Health Unit of Alter do Chão, from January 2009 to
January 2020, will be collected from the Unit's proceedings and passed on to a
standardized form. In addition, the application of the System of Notification of Accidents
by Arraals - SNAA mobile, regarding its usability and functionality, will be evaluated for
the notification of accidents. Preliminary results from data collection at the 24-hour
Health Unit show that, from 2009 to 2016, 391 cases of stinging accidents were attended.
From that period, in 2012 and 2015, there were the highest number of occurrences (60
and 79 accidents, respectively), with september and december having the highest number
of cases (72, 4%). Accidents occurred mostly in the daytime period (41.4%), and 68% of
the accidents occurred in Alter do Chão, neighboring communities and Santarém. Male
individuals (71, 4%), aged between 21 and 40 years old (45, 4%), were the group most
affected by stings of stingrays, the most affected anatomic region was foot (7, 4%), the
infection was present in 1, 8% of the cases that had the symptoms reported in the
procedure books. The care provided to the victims was performed mainly by nurses (63,
9%). The most commonly adopted treatment procedures were debridement, dressing and
medication use. With this study, we hope to obtain the clinical and epidemiological profile
of the accidents caused by stingrays that received care at the 24-hour Health Unit of the
Alter do Chão Village, in addition to evaluating the SNAA mobile software, which allows
the notification of the accidents, opening possibilities to obtain statistics of accidents by
stingrays, in order to contribute to the improvement of patient care and the qualification
of health professionals, for a more effective treatment of injured people. We also hope to
collaborate with future researches on the subject and with the Village where the study
will be carried out, disseminating the knowledge acquired the same.
