RESUMO:

The effects of Impact Reduced Logging (RIL) with medium harvest intensity (24.3 m³/ha) was investigated on an understorey avian assembly of a lowland forest on Central Amazon (Tapajós National Forest) comparing logged and unlogged sites. Sampling ocurred before the activity and until two and half years post-harvest and the canopy openess was also sampled. The entire study captured 692 birds of 71 species among 29 familys in a total of 5.760 hours of mist-nets opened.  Samples between the logged and unlogged areas obtained high species similarity (67.1%) and the analyzes of variance and the NMDS procedure demonstrated that the activity did not have a significant effect on the birds' richness, abundance and composition patterns. Insectivores grouped represented most of the species in the assembly and showed significant reduction after logging in 2016, as well as the army ant followers insectivorous. However, these trophic guilds obtained recovery in their abundances two and a half years after the activity to pre-logging levels. The opening of the canopy increased significantly after the harvest and the relation of this environmental variable with the trophic guilds showed that only the terrestrial insectivores were impacted. The relative large scale of 800 ha surveyed and the presence of mosaics of primary and disturbed areas at the study site appear to have diluted the effects of logging, as well as the medium harvest intensity associated with the use of Reduced Impact logging techniques have minimized impacts on the ecological parameters analyzed. RIL presents as a viable economic alternative to maintain a large part of the understorey avifauna in the Central Amazon, provided that the parameters established by law for maximum intensity of harvest and minimum cutting cycles are constantly improved, in addition to the need for more comprehensive monitoring of biota in longer time frames to elucidate whether these populations are remaining in these disturbed forest ecosystems.
