RESUMO:

The genus Amphisbaena comprises about 96 valid species, with 65 species registered in
Brazil. Despite its richness in relation to other genera,
Amphisbaena still lacks
information on morphological, ontogenetic, sexual and geographical variations. This
deficit is higher for those species that are known only by the standard series or that have
geographic distribution restricted for a given locality. An example of this is
Amphisbaena
steindachneri
described more than 50 years ago and represented by four specimens; and
A. roberti with specimens from the Brazilian states of São Paulo, Goiás and Minas Gerais,
and an indication of geographic variation in relation to the number of body rings and
number of caudal rings. This study was carried out to investigate the intraspecific
variation of
A. roberti and to review the taxonomic status of A. steindachneri. In the study
of
A. roberti, 11 meristic characters, 50 morphometric characters and qualitative
characters of 133 specimens, including the holotype, were analyzed with the purpose of
testing the variation and recharacterizing the species. Based on the shape of cephalic
shields, staining and body structure, the sample was divided into morphotypes "A. roberti
"," Goiás / Minas Gerais "and" Estreito ". To verify which meristic and morphometric
characters best assist in the distinction between the morphotypes, a Discriminant Analysis
of Principal Components was developed. Differences in main coordinate values per
individual among the morphotypes were tested using a combination of Analysis of
Variance and Tukey's Test. The morphotypes tested statistically are not significantly
different and no discrete morphological characters have been identified that can be used
as a diagnosis for the specimens
. A. roberti presented qualitative variation among the
specimens and their diagnosis was restructured with new meristic characters and addition
of morphometric data. In addition, its geographic distribution was complemented for 14
new localities and a gazeteer with 45 locations was structured for the species. For
A.
steindachneri
, in addition to the four specimens cited in the bibliography, another 14
specimens were located in scientific collections for the Cerrado and Pantanal biomes.
Based on these specimens
A. steindachneri was redescribed, a lectoparatype was
redefined as a new species and a second new species was also described. The species were
diagnosed based on 11 meristic characters, 56 morphometrics, layout and shape of the
cephalic shields and tail shape. In the taxonomic review developed the diagnosis of
A.
steindachneri
was restructured and redescribed, a new species was described for the
Amazon biome and one for the Chiquitano Dry Forests ecoregion in the southern portion
of the Cerrado biome that is known with a transition area between the biomes Amazonia
and Cerrado.
