RESUMO:

Water is a fundamental natural resource for life and in recent years it has suffered intense anthropic pressure, as a consequence, there is already a lack of drinking water in some countries. The Amazon region, known worldwide for having the largest freshwater hydrographic basin in the world, has had its surface waters negatively impacted over the years due to mineral exploration, land use and human occupation. These impacts brought serious consequences to the traditional populations that live along the banks of the rivers that make up the Amazon basin. Therefore, the present study studied the feasibility of using zeolite type A synthesized in the laboratory from kaolin from the Amazon, for application as ceramic for water filters. As identified in the literature, zeolite has the capacity to serve as a filter medium due to its characteristic called "molecular sieve", this allows the total removal of heavy metals dissolved in the fluid. The synthesis was done using the hydrothermal method, with calcination taking place in a muffle furnace at 800ºC for 2h and followed by cationic exchange (Na +) in the presence of a 2.25 mol / L NaOH solution, heated next to the activated kaolin conditioned in a reactor, at temperature of 110ºC for 4h. The samples of zeolite type A were characterized by X-ray X-ray diffraction and thermo analytical analysis methods (TG / DTG / DSC / DTA), formed into pellets and calcined at 500, 600 and 700ºC for 4h. The pieces were physically evaluated for porosity and mechanical resistance to the passage of water. The research concluded that the process of synthesis of zeolite type A is efficient for all the samples used and the firing process of the shaped pieces showed better results for the sample identified as zeo_04 at a temperature of 700ºC, it showed satisfactory mechanical resistance maintaining the same crystallographic phase.
