RESUMO:

The objective of this work is to evaluate the survival and performance of Brazil nut tree seedlings (Bertholletia excelsa Bonpl.) planted in degraded areas with different soil preparation and fertilization. For this purpose, we carried out an experimental planting of B. excelsa in an abandoned pasture area of Fazenda Santa Rita da União, Canaã dos Carajás / PA, a neighboring region the mosaic of conservation units in Carajás. We implemented four experimental treatments in plots of 1 hectare with the following preparation characteristics: T01 - testimony (hydrogel, chemical fertilizer); T02- organic (hydrogel, organic fertilizer); T03 - dry organic (without hydrogel, organic fertilizer); and T04- dry (without hydrogel, chemical fertilizer). The spacing of B. excelsa seedlings was 12x12 m. Seedlings were over 2 years old, 60.95 cm of average height and 4.55 mm of average diameter. The total number of seedlings was 337. During two years of monitoring, dendrometric data (total height, Diameter at Ground Height - DAS and number of leaves) and seedling survival for quarterly periods was collected. Among the main results, we highlight: 1) soils of the four planting treatments have a sandy loam texture and high levels of fertility; 2) high survival rates in all treatments, providing a total survival rate of 82.79%, however, treatment 02 showed a significantly lower survival rate than the other three treatments in the last monitored period (24 months); 3) concentration of herbivory events in the months of July and October in the two years of observation; 4) At the end of the monitoring, two treatments without the use of hydrogel (03 and 04) had better performance for all parameters evaluated, with significant differences compared with the other two treatments (01 and 02). It is concluded that the Brazil nut seedlings have high survival and high resistance to herbivory, confirming the plant's rusticity and its potential for use in restoration areas. Even so, the repeated events of herbivory caused low growth in height of the seedlings in general (IMAh = 19.51). “Dry Organic” treatment showed the best growth rates, in relation to the other three, but the differences were only significantly greater with the treatments that used hydrogel (01 and 02). Based on the results obtained and considering the potential of using hydrogel in soil preparation, we suggest that the relevance of using this element be evaluated, since the circumstances applied in this study did not cause substantial improvements in growth or survival.
