RESUMO:

Defined as areas that suffer flooding, forming an interface between terrestrial and
aquatic environments, the wetland, can occur naturally or artificially, with permanent
or periodic flooding. The Amazon region has the largest watershed on the planet and
one of the largest wetlands, with approximately 800,000 km², where we find a specific
type of flooded forest, the varzea forests, which are humid areas that have a
monomodal, predictable and long-term flood pulse by rivers of white water. Quantifying
the biomass production in dynamic environments, such as varzeas, is an important
challenge due to the need to better understand the future trajectory of the net carbon
balance in those ecosystems, as well as the role of varzea ecosystem in the global
carbon productivity. The current project aims to estimate the annual production of
litterfall and the concentration of litter nutrients in a varzea forest in eastern Amazonia,
investigating patterns of seasonal occurrence and the influence of environmental
factors. We collected litterfall monthly, since January 2018, in 1 hectare of lowland
forest, using 12 floating collectors. The study area is located in the District of
Arapixuna, municipality of Santarém-PA. The data will be correlated with some
physical factors that may influence the litter production, such as flood level, flow,
precipitation and temperature. Preliminary results, referring to collections of the years
2018, 2019 and January 2020. Results showed that leaves are responsible for most of
the litter production (58%). 2019 has been the year of highest litter production with
16266.78 kg ha
-1 year. Over the 25 months of litter collection, it is possible to observe
an indicative of seasonality pattern in the litter production. The greater production
occurred in the months that the river flow is higher, which corresponds to the period of
flooding in the study area.
