SUMMARY:

The Amazon biome has a diversity of vegetation formations, among them the floodplain forest, which has as its main characteristic tree species that are adapted to the mono-modal flood pulse. Although there are several studies on floodplain forests, studies on the composition, structure and dynamics of the regeneration stratum of floodplain forests are still scarce. Such information is important to highlight how sensitive this stratum is to environmental changes. The objective of this work is to analyze the floristic composition, structure and dynamics of the natural regenerating stratum of a floodplain forest. To perform this analysis several parameters such as floristic composition, structure, biomass, mortality rate and survival rate were evaluated. Ten 10m x 10m plots were installed in a floodplain forest in the district of Arapixuna, Santarém-PA, where the forest inventory of the tree population with diameters above 10 cm had been previously carried out. Tree species with heights of 50 cm to 3 m and Diameter at breast height (DBH) less than 10 cm were measured.  To analyze the horizontal structure, phytosociological parameters such as Relative Density (RD) and Relative Frequency (RF) were calculated for each height class. To analyze the vertical structure the natural regeneration index by height class for each species (RNC) was classified and calculated, and the sum of the RNC results in the total natural regeneration index (RNT). An inventory of plants was prepared, divided into three height classes: 1: (50 cm ≤ h ≤ 1.0 m); 2: (1.0 m < h ≤ 2.0 m) and 3: (2.0 < h ≥ 3.0 m). Thus, the phytosociological analysis will consider the vertical and horizontal structure to analyze the regeneration structure and biomass quantification of this forest. A total of 447 individuals, 16 species (7 species were identified at species level, 6 at genus level and 3 undetermined), 13 genera and 13 botanical families were recorded. The families: Fabaceae and Myrtaceae, accounted for 64.26% of the total (447) individuals collected, being the families with the highest abundance of species. The species: Schizolobium amazonicum Huber ex Ducke, Gustavia augusta L., Ouratea sp. Aubl. and Cassia leiandra Benth were the most prominent in this study, showing great importance to the plant community and several adaptations that allow their establishment. Therefore, these measurements are important in understanding the role of the regenerative stratum in biogeochemical cycles, especially in carbon fixation, thus generating subsidies for better management of these areas and management of the resources and services that standing forests can produce.
