SUMMARY:

Defined as areas that suffer flooding, forming an interface between terrestrial and aquatic environments, the wetland, can occur naturally or artificially, with permanent or periodic flooding. The Amazon region has the largest watershed on the planet and one of the largest wetlands, with approximately 800,000 km², where we find a specific type of flooded forest, the varzea forests, which are humid areas that have a monomodal, predictable and long-term flood pulse by rivers of white water. Quantifying the biomass production in dynamic environments, such as varzeas, is an important challenge due to the need to better understand the future trajectory of the net carbon balance in those ecosystems, as well as the role of varzea ecosystem in the global carbon productivity. The current project aims to estimate the annual production of litterfall and the concentration of litter nutrients in a varzea forest in eastern Amazonia, investigating patterns of seasonal occurrence and the influence of environmental factors. The results obtained showed that among the years sampled, 2019 had the highest production 16266.78 kg ha-1 year. The monthly average production for the period was 1,251.9 kg ha-1 month, with the leaf fraction responsible for most of the litter produced, 61.2%. Regarding the hydrograph phases, the flood phase presented the highest productivity and the dry phase the lowest. Among the environmental factors analyzed, quota and flow showed a strong and positive correlation, while precipitation showed no correlation and temperature showed a weak negative correlation. These results show the existence of a relationship between the phases of the hydrograph and the production of litter, which responds to the increase in the water level with a greater release of plant material.
