SUMMARY:

Citrus farming is one of the most important agricultural activities developed in Brazil, the country being the 2nd largest producer of citrus fruits in the world, the largest producer of oranges and the largest producer and exporter of frozen orange juice in the world. The technical-scientific knowledge applied to production was an important factor that contributed to the success of this activity both in the production of citrus fruits in natura and by-products. Ecophysiology is a branch of science that contributes to the success of a culture in a given environment, helping in the selection of suitable genetic materials, in the choice of cultural practices to be used, etc. In Brazil, citrus is produced in all regions of the country and the state of Pará has, over the last few years, gained prominence in this segment, being the largest in the North region. Thanks to this prominence, the state government instituted, the citrus poles of Pará: the Northeast and the West, the first being the most prominent in citrus production in the State. Considering what has been presented so far, the objective of this research was to evaluate the state of knowledge, through bibliographical consultation of scientific articles published from 2011 to 2021 on the ecophysiology of citrus plants in Brazil using gas exchange parameters and photochemical efficiency for the analysis . In addition, we also sought to analyze the development of citrus growing in the Citrus Pole of Western Pará in the last 15 years (2005 to 2020) and the potential of this region for the development of the activity through the evaluation of production data available in the IBGE System of Automatic Recovery (SIDRA) on the Municipal Agricultural Production (PAM) of perennial crop products (orange, lemon and tangerine). Regarding citrus ecophysiology studies, the results indicate that research has contributed to understanding the behavior of different citrus varieties in the face of environmental conditions, in order to direct the selection of cultivars that are better adapted to the edaphoclimatic characteristics of the growing environment. The analysis of the development of citriculture in the Citrus Pole of Western Pará indicates that the region has been growing over the years, with potential to increase in the coming years, with Tahiti lemon cultivation leading citrus production in this region. The results obtained in these researches can contribute with information for future researches in citriculture in Brazil and especially in the North region. Support from the scientific community to producers can provide greater development of the crop and encourage processing to add value to citrus plants grown in the region.
