SUMMARY:

Due to its economic potential and silvicultural characteristics, the Brazil nut tree (Bertholletia excelsa) has been one of the main native forest species recommended for the recovery of degraded areas in the Amazon. In the actions developed in Carajás, the mining company carries out a program to recover degraded pasture areas using this species as a form of environmental compensation for the impacts caused by its activities. Previous experiments in the region suggest that competition for light between grass and other herbaceous plants and Brazil nut seedlings is probably an important ecological bottleneck for the success of planting this tree species. The present work aimed to test the use of alternative silvicultural techniques to combat the competition of Bertholletia excelsa seedlings with grass and other invasive herbaceous plants in degraded pasture areas, through the use of palm leaves, synthetic blankets (geotextiles) and manual mowing. The data from this experiment confirm previous studies that characterize B. excelsa as a species with potential for recovering degraded areas due to its high rusticity, high survival rates and regrowth capacity. No statistically significant differences were detected between the treatments in terms of survival or growth in height and diameter of the seedlings, however, a tendency towards growth in larger diameter was observed in the seedlings that did not resprout and were at intermediate coverage percentages, despite the relatively high survival rate, it is not possible to say that the planting was successful, as only 18% of the seedlings showed normal development, without the trauma caused by the drying out of the apex during the dry season.
