RESUMO:
Studies that focus on the influence of tourism on social and socio-environmental relations in
the Amazonian Atlantic coast follow two perspectives. Studies with anthropological
orientation tend to focus on social relations rearrangements through which tourism
phenomenon is expressed. Adopting contextual perspective, they conceive that the process of
change can be understood only by the analysis of its specific social circumstances. Also, a
tradition of interdisciplinary studies emerges in the region, and it aims to record the diversity
of relations between society and nature. Faced with tourism phenomenon, the second
perspective tends to recognize it as a trigger of the host populations lifestyles disruption, that
threatens the traditional knowledge associated to the environment. Thus, it is suggested that
the premises adopted by interdisciplinary fields have hampered communications with
disciplinary fields, favoring the resurgence of discussions already worn out in consolidated
research fields. Empirical basis for the argumentation is provided by the hamlet of Marudá, on
the coast of Pará. Although repeatedly presented as a fishing village in process of conversion
into a seaside touristic destination, the locality continues to be taken as scenario for
inventories of traditional knowledge, which denies the prospects that once predicted the loss
of its inhabitants’ knowledge due to the contact with tourists. As the task of elucidating the
relationship between tourism and change in Marudá remains unfinished, the thesis aims to
explain the conditions of possibility that permitted tourism, in spite of its role in diverse
rearrangements, not to promote disorganization of the socio-environmental practices held by
the natives. Through the study of social and socio-environmental changes and continuities in
the place, it intends to determine the precise influence of touristic practices in these processes.
Combining data provided by scientific literature with data produced in field work
circumstances – through participant observation and semi-structured interviews –, the
research aims to recognize the main rearrangements occurred between 1950 and 2010
decades, related to work sphere, pivotal domain of social and daily life organization. The
thesis focus on the social relations underlying the engagement to different time allocation
modalities and the specific configurations of natural resource use; thereby, it demonstrates
tourism, although absorbing native workforce and occupying it in functions related to summer
demands, did not promote disruption of their lifestyles or disorganization of their economic
strategies. By temporarily freeing the natives from the preponderant dependence on fishing
activity, the engagement to beach tourism represented an economic alternative for that
population, restoring the condition of economic polyvalence that it enjoyed before the
consolidation of fishing as a specialized activity. Thus, although tourism relates to spatial and
occupational change in a primary level, it also relates to social continuities and resurgences in
a deeper level. Finally, the thesis concludes that the split between interdisciplinary fields and
disciplinary fields, in spite of the legitimate need to preserve particular approaches to different
objects of study, has fueled the reproduction of avoidable misunderstandings.
