SUMMARY:

Cyperus articulatus L. is a species that occurs in the Amazon, known for its rhizomes and tubers that exude a woody and characteristic aroma. Known as priprioca, it is used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments and in the manufacture of colonies and artisanal flavorings. A few years ago, the essential oil of the species became the raw material of the Natura Cosmetics Company, which uses it in the perfume that bears the name "Rara Priprioca". This caused C. articulatus L. to be cultivated on a commercial scale by small rural producers, becoming a source of income for paraense families in the Belém region. The essential oil extraction process generates large quantities of the hydrolate by-products (waste aqueous) and solid residue (vegetal mass), which are discarded after the process. In order to obtain a more sustainable process, this study chemically characterized the essential oil, the ethanolic extract and the hexane extract of the solid residue in two seasonal periods (dry and rainy) and the fractions of the essential oil and extracts by Gas Chromatography coupled with Spectrometry of Masses (CG-EM). Antimicrobial activity was assessed using the techniques of disk diffusion and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC). The antiproliferative activity in vitro was evaluated against human tumor strains. The antioxidant capacity was determined using DPPH. Two prototypes of bioproducts were developed: one using essential oil and the other using the ethanolic extract of the solid residue of C. articulatus L. The yields obtained for the essential oil and extracts of C. articulatus were higher in the dry period. The essential oil of the species (dry and rainy season) consists mainly of oxygenated sesquiterpenes, the major compounds being mustacone and cyclocolorenone. These sesquiterpenes were also identified in the extracts of the species' solid waste. The essential oil (dry and rainy season) was active against the 13 strains of microorganisms evaluated, the most sensitive being E. coli, S. epidermidis and N. gonorrhoeae (CIM = 15.625 μg.mL-1). Both the essential oil and the hexane extract produced halos of inhibition greater than the Nystatin control, compared to the fungus Candida krusei. The hexanic extract showed the most significant antiproliferative activity compared to the human tumor strains evaluated, however, the activity decreased significantly after the fractionation of the extract. The ethanolic extract showed an antioxidant capacity about 35% higher than that of the ethanolic extract of the solid residue of the species, indicating that there was a loss of compounds with antioxidant activity during the essential oil extraction process. A crystalline liquid formulation with murumuru butter (Astrocaryum murumuru) and essential oil of C. articulatus (1, 2.5 and 5%) was obtained in which all proportions showed birefringence with textures in the form of striations, characteristic of liquid phase. hexagonal type crystalline when subjected to polarized light microscopy, indicating efficiency in the controlled release of drugs and mucoadhesive properties, characteristics favorable to the development of a phytotherapic with antifungal activity for the treatment of candidiasis. In addition to essential oil, the ethanolic extract of the solid residue of the species demonstrated great potential to become a raw material for biocosmetic and phytotherapic products, due to the innumerable biological activities and low added value. Thus, Cyperus articulatus L., the famous priprioca can be considered a natural resource with great economic potential for the northern region of Brazil, especially for the state of Pará.
