SUMMARY:

Universities are spaces that encourage change and can bring development models to society, so, given the new paradigm of Sustainability, the concept of higher education institutions (HEIs) that incorporate sustainable practices and habits in its policy and management, since 1990, it has become a strong yearning for them. With initiatives carried out for a more sustainable configuration in HEIs, studies on sustainability in university environments grow. But, given the social, economic and physical-ecological specificities of each country, and even within a single country, as in Brazil, the configurations and environmental performance of universities end up subject to these factors, which leads to reflection on how it should be a Sustainable University (SU) that can reflect the context of the Brazilian Amazon Region? Thus, the objective of this Thesis is to identify and analyze the aspects, practices, indicators and criteria that may be more relevant to the design of a SU in the region. For this, methodological procedures pertinent to each specific objective were used, culminating in the composition of four articles: the first is a comprehensive literature review that verified and analyzed the world events that drove and started the conceptual model of SU, this influence in Brazil and implications for HEIs in the Amazon; the second identified sustainable practices at Ufopa and verified the internal community's perception of them; the third extracted indicators from Ufopa, obtaining its position in a global sustainability ranking and its position, of an experimental nature, in the national context; and the fourth presents an analysis of the strategic role of Ufopa's sustainability plan, through the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) approach. The results obtained elucidated the central issue, corroborated by the three accepted hypotheses: 1. Ufopa, even though it carries out sustainable practices and has an institutional commitment to the SD, reached, in a global sustainability classifier, a position farthest from the first positions; 2. The internal academic community of Ufopa, a US located in the Brazilian Amazon region, seeks to promote ecological, sociocultural processes and participatory dialogues; 3. By applying SEA to Ufopa's sustainability plan, the social, economic and environmental pillars of a US are in balance, with criteria focused on Governance/Policies, Teaching/Research/Extension, People and Operational Management, whose strategic actions should focus on promising results in the short and medium term.
