TITLE:

Conceptual learning model based on emotions and memory formation

KEY WORDS:

Memory formation. Emotions. Learning.

PAGES: 178
BIG AREA: Outra
AREA: Ciências Ambientais
SUMMARY:

The conscious processing of information takes place in the limited Working Memory (WM),
and considers different types of cognitive load, which is the effort imposed on cognitive processes
to perform tasks. The 'intrinsic' cognitive load is related to the complexity of the content, which may
require more elaborate mental processes for its understanding. The 'relevant' charge concerns the
mental processes necessary to understand the content, such as the ability to synthesise, compare
and infer. During the presentation of the content, the 'irrelevant' load may appear, which comes
from the way the content is presented, which can generate overload in the WM. Emotions are
phenomena that manifest themselves through changes in physiology and mental processes, and
mobilize cognitive functions such as interest and focus. It can be seen, therefore, that emotions and
memories are variables that inNluence the learning process. To test a conceptual model to support
learning based on emotions and memory formation, this experimental research will seek to
investigate the emotions and cognitive functions prevalent in higher education students while
viewing video classes prepared from guidelines that enhance (scenario 1) and minimize (scenario
2) the overload on the WM, as well as the correlation between such variables, within the scope of
the Cognitive Load Theory. Forty-Nive randomly selected subjects will be part of the sample.
Emotions will be identiNied using the CADAP computational tool, which captures facial expressions
and translates them into emotions: joy, fear, anger, disgust, sadness, contempt and surprise.
Cognitive functions will be identiNied using Emotiv Epocx, a mobile Electroencephalography (EEG)
device that records the electrical activity of the brain, matching cognitive functions in the form of
performance metrics: stress, engagement, interest, enthusiasm, focus and relaxation. The data will
be analyzed with the tools of Inferential Statistics, and the choice of tests will depend on the
normality of the data.
