SUMMARY:

The process of land use planning in areas along river margins in the lower Amazon region in the state of Pará is guided by the concept that these areas are collective territories that are occupied by intergenerational populations that compose these riverside communities, and that they have great agroextractivist potential. Due to seasonality that results in alternating seasons of high and low water, agricultural activity is focused on cultivation of legumes in planting beds raised up on wooden platforms above the water level, on harvesting fruits from perennial trees, and on fishing activities. The objetive is to analyze indicators that express, in an interdisciplinary manner, the process of land use planning using as an example the Urucurituba Agroextractivist Settlement Project, in Santarém, state of Pará. The method employed in this research is quali-quantitative, and this type of integration of methods is necessary to be able to incorporate the complexity inherent in the object of study. To this end, semi-structured questionnaires were applied to describe the situation of local community members, along with detailed analysis of government decrees, prior consultation protocols, meeting minutes, and technical reports. This study discusses the elaboration of public policies that regulate the process of land use planning in areas along river margins in the lower Amazon region and is the first project of this nature to be conducted in the Brazilian Amazon. This study provides an interdisciplinary viewpoint on implementation of public policies that regulate land use planning, Land use planning. Lower Amazon. Public Policies. Amazonian River Margins.  Urucurituba.  Regional Development which allows for a multi-voiced dialogue between the different social actors involved in the process. This will then help to indicate the best management strategies and ways to apply and implement these legal instruments in order to improve the socioeconomic indicators of the affected communities. This study shows that the process of land use planning in areas along river margins in the lower Amazon region has been a useful legal instrument for recognition of forms of occupation of territory along river margins and has empowered families by providing them with social guarantees and public policies that promote sustainable development.
