SUMMARY:

The ecosystems during the floodplainare periodically enriched by the deposition of sediments
during seasonal or tidal floods, resulting in relatively higher soil fertility than in non-flooded lands or “
upland”, although the várzea presents a fertile soil, due to thesedimentation process, there are limiting
factors in this environment, such as: the seasonality of the waters, therefore, this thesis project aims to
analyze the characteristics, dynamics and quality of the chemical, physical and biological indicators of the
soil in function of the flooding regime of the forest of floodplain. Based on the hypothesis that the
flooding regime impacts the integrity of the soils of the floodplain ecosystem, in this sense, samples of
soils from the floodplain forest of the Amazon river channel were analyzed in different seasonal seasons
and through multivariate data analysis, the soil characteristics were qualitatively evaluated in each
seasonal season, in addition to verifying the variables that are most related to each of theseseasons. In the
theoretical basis of the thesis, a bibliographic survey was carried out on the main biogeochemical
characteristics of the floodplain soils and the soil quality indicators; Chapter I Characterized the chemical
indicators and granulometry insoils of floodplain forests in the eastern Amazon, the study area comprised
the floodplain area in the channel of the Amazon River, where samples were collected at different points
of the stretch that comprises the municipality of Santarém and Gurupá in the state of Pará; Chapter II-
Evaluated the physical, chemical and biological indicators of soil quality in floodplain agroecosystems
with different management in the municipality of Santarém-PA, samples were collected in the Piracaoera
de Baixo, Pixuna do Tapará, Costa do Aritapera and Arapixuna communities that have their agricultural
activity concentrated in the period of low waters. We conclude that floodplain soils exhibited high
variability in chemical and physical properties as a result of differences in sediment discharges from
tributaries of the Amazon River basin, demonstrating the heterogeneity of floodplainsoils and high
fertility in floodplain agroecosystems is associated with the pulse of floodplain soils. natural flooding and
the type of soil management employed, in addition, the replacement of native vegetation by cultivation
systems cause important changes in the chemical, physical and biological attributes of the soil
