  • The most prevalent and consequential oral disease worldwide is dental caries, which has serious economic and health burdens, significantly reducing the quality of life of those affected. Children and socially marginalized groups are the most affected by oral diseases and consequently have little access to dental care. Research demonstrates the effectiveness of medicinal plant extracts against oral microorganisms and, consequently, their benefits in the oral health of individuals. Thus, the proposed study aims at preclinical studies of efficacy and safety and the development of a phytotherapeutic mouthwash, with antimicrobial action, from the oil and ethanolic extracts of the rhizomes and solid residue from a medicinal and aromatic plant from the Amazon, the priprioca (Cyperus articulatus).  After obtaining and chemically characterizing the essential oil, ethanolic extract of intact rhizomes and ethanolic extract of the solid residue of C. articulatus by gas chromatography (GC-MS), antimicrobial activity through the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) test and toxicity assessment on the hen's egg chorioallantoic membrane (HET-CAM), we identified sesquiterpenes as the main constituents, antimicrobial activity of essential oil, rhizomes and solid residue of C. articulatus on Streptococcus mutans at concentrations of 0.58 mg/ml , 0.29 mg/ml and 2.34 mg/ml respectively, as well as absence of toxicities for all substances tested. These results can validate the use of these naturals products in Dentistry and to certify its bioactives as a potential natural anti-cariogenic drug; seeking in this way, alternatives for prevention in oral health, reducing the rate of caries disease in the region.
