SUMMARY:

The municipality of Santarém, located in the western region of Pará, area of influence of the BR-163 federal highway (Cuiabá-Santarém) and the Tapajós and Amazonas River Waterway, has been consolidating itself as one of the main outlets for the flow of grains and other products via ports for the international market. In this process, there is a reorganization of urban space to meet this demand, especially in specific neighborhoods located in Port Area II of the municipality, such as the Área Verde neighborhood. This spatial area is located in the east of the city, limited in its northeast portion by the Amazon River and to the east by the floodplain of Maicá Lake. In recent years, the Área Verde neighborhood has received attention from investors for the construction of port facilities. However, these port investments have generated conflicts due to the socio-environmental impacts associated with their implementation. In this context, this research aims to analyze the relationship between port expansion and changes in land use and coverage in the Área Verde neighborhood between 2002 and 2022, through remote sensing and geoprocessing techniques. It also aims to identify the perception and expectations of the local population regarding the main socio-environmental impacts of ports in the neighborhood and surrounding region, as well as investigating social conflicts in the neighborhood, arising from port projects, through interviews with inhabitants in the study area. The results of this research can propose necessary and important measures within the scope of planning, environmental and territorial management in the studied area.
