RESUMO:

Geometry is everywhere in which the human being establishes himself, giving him the opportunity to investigate through his different knowledge, mathematics and his diversity. About 1,500 d. C. modern symbolic algebra took its first steps, constituting with archethintics and geometry the disciplinary tripod in the teaching and learning process of mathematical knowledge in European schools. Although Euclidean geometry and aritmetics were already consolidated as disciplines of European school education, this disciplinary tripod lasted until the 20th century, when from 1950, the school curriculum in the world underwent a modernization and reformulation, which emphasized algebra, with geometry approached intuitively, to the detriment of the logical process deducible until then consolidated. Such changes were established with the Movement of Modern Mathematics (MMM), of global scope, which made geometry, aritmetic and algebra, contents of the discipline Mathematics. Educators in the United States of America, later followed by the vast majority of European educators, quickly abandoned the new approach proposed for Mathematics Education, as they realized that the focus on algebra, aritmetics and set theory, with the superficiality of geometric knowledge, would cause serious distortions in the learning process of mathematics. Unfortunately, in Brazil this approach is still strongly present, being an important factor for repetition and low rates, obtained by students of basic education in national and international evaluations, related to mathematical knowledge. This work brings to the discussion, using the Field Research, a pilot project implemented from 2014 at the Centro Educacional Anchieta, in the municipality of Itaituba-PA, in which the pedagogical planning of the school made geometry a discipline, with a monthly workload of 20 h, making available to its faculty a programmatic grid that would develop a solid basis of the most important geometric concepts of elementary and high school , with the aim of improving the teaching and learning process of mathematics, and consequently reducing repetition and obtaining better results in national evaluations. To this end, a schedule of all geometric contents to be completed bimonthly, from the 6th to the 9th grade of elementary school was created, jointly with algebra and aritmetics, seeking skills and competencies arranged in the PCN's and abncc. The research shows that the emphasis on the study of Geometry, with specific classes of this theme, together with new methodologies and educational technologies, succeeded in reducing repetition and significantly improved the average of the students' grades in the ENEM exam. The paper also presents the opinion of mathematics teachers, from the municipality of Itaituba, about the adoption of Geometry as a discipline.
