RESUMO:

Diabetes mellitus is the fastest growing chronic condition, especially in developing countries. Considering the increasing number of diabetes cases, high costs related to its control, the treatment of its complications, numerous side effects caused by oral and injectable medication and popular use of plants, the aim of this study was to evaluate the hypoglycemic activity of essential oil. of Piper marginatum in mice. Leaves and branches of P. marginatum  were collected at the Federal University of Western Pará, Campus Tapajós, between September 2018 and April 2019. The leaves were oven dried at 40 ° C for 4 days, then shredded. and weighed for later obtaining essential oil through the hydrodistillation method using the Clevenger type apparatus. Chemical characterization was performed by gas chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) in the Divisão de Química Orgânica e Farmacêutica of the Centro de Pluridisciplinar de Pesquisas Químicas Biológicas e Agrícolas (CPQBA) of the University of Campinas - São Paulo (UNICAMP). For the evaluation of acute oral toxicity, 12 isogenic Swiss female mice were submitted to the experiment. Two experimental groups (n: 3 animals for each group) of mice were divided into the first stage: group 1 - control received by gavage only vehicle (0.9% NaCl), group 2 - test received P. marginatum essential oil at 2000mg / kg dose, diluted with 0.312% tween, 15% ethanol and 0.9% saline, the dose was tested twice. This project was submitted to the Animal Ethics Committee of UFOPA - CEUA / UFOPA and was approved under protocol 1120180048/2019. The animals showed no symptoms or clinical signs of toxicity, such as tremors, convulsions, salivation, diarrhea, lethargy, skin and hair color changes, classifying the species as low toxicity, according to protocol OECD-423/2001.
