RESUMO:
Introduction: In the environment and in biological systems, mercury can exist in three oxidation states: Hg0 (Metallic), inorganic mercury and organic mercury. Of all the contaminant metals, mercury (Hg) is the most toxic, as well as the only metal capable of biomagnification in the food chain, that is, its concentrations are increasing according to the trophic levels of the species, including man. Justification: Once in the human organism, the most toxic form of Hg, known as Methylmercury (MeHg), easily crosses the placental barrier, concentrating especially on the brain, inhibiting the fetal brain development and slowing the Intrauterine growth, children generated under such exposures may present microcephaly, Hyperrreflexia and visual, auditory, mental and motor impairment. For these reasons, a major concern is the exposure of women of childbearing age and children to this chemical element. Objective: To evaluate the total mercury levels in populations of newborns and their mothers in the western region of Pará. Methodology: The study will participate in 220 pregnant women attended in municipal hospitals of the cities of Itaituba and Santarém, through the approval of the Ethics in Research Committee of the State University of Pará and signing of the term of free consent and Clarified, samples of: maternal hair and nails, fetal placental tissue, umbilical cord and umbilical blood will be collected, as well as a semi-structured questionnaire to collect data on the socio-environmental profile, habits Prenatal and new-born information. Discussion and preliminary results: data collection and biological samples were collected from 110 parturients and their newborns, in the obstetric clinic of the Hospital Municipal de Itaituba, from December 19, 2018 to January 23, 2019.
