RESUMO:

Population growth results in an increase in the disposal of solid waste and the need for prepared sites for the proper destination of this waste, called landfills, in order to avoid pollution and environmental degradation through the contact of toxic compounds, such as Mercury (Hg), with the soil and, consequently, with the water. When there is no minimum adequacy of the environment with processes for waterproofing the soil and channeling leachate, this environment used to dispose of waste is called “dump”. The city of Santarém, in Pará, has a population of more than 300 thousand inhabitants and provides only one “dump” for the final destination of waste generated in the municipality. The area where the “dump” is located is surrounded by a rural community. Thus, the objective of this work is to analyze the groundwater collected from artesian wells for the presence of total mercury. The spatial sampling of groundwater will consist of 18 points combined with nine collections over time, totaling a total of 162 samples. For the detection and quantification of mercury residues in water, the optical emission spectrometry method with inductively coupled plasma (ICP OES) from a Vista-MPX CCD mass spectrometer will be used. In this study, the perception of community members regarding the perception of chemical risk will also be verified through a semi-structured questionnaire. Past studies under similar conditions carried out for other regions of the country and the world revealed the significant presence of mercury in the analyzed samples. Therefore, this study seeks to contribute to the water security of rural populations that are vulnerable because they are located around a “dump”.
