Comparative evaluation of Rhipcephalus (Boophilus) microplus tick resistance among taurine cattle (Bos taurus taurus), zebu cattle (Bos taurus indicus) and buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis)

The objective is to comparatively evaluate the resistance of taurine and zebu cattle and of buffaloes to the ox tick (Rhipicephalus microplus). 18 bovines will be used, being 6 taurine, 6 zebu and 6 buffalo. All animals will be artificially infested with 0.2 g of larvae from a colony of R. microplus (4 thousand larvae) in an infestation chamber and will be monitored for 30 days. The animals will be observed daily to verify the conditions of the infestation chamber and health status. Additionally, hematological and biochemical evaluations will be performed on day zero, before infestation and 7, 14, 21 and 30 days after infestation. The success rate of infestation throughout the tick's life cycle will be determined by verifying how many adult ticks can reach the reproductive stage from a fixed number of infested larvae. The engorged females collected after infestation will be kept in a controlled environment until oviposition, when the eggs will be weighed and separated in syringes to determine hatchability and the estimated reproduction rate will then be calculated. Host resistance will be determined according to the classical recommendation, calculated by the average percentage of larvae that failed to develop into an engorged adult female, with bovines classified as highly resistant, or with moderate, low or very low resistance. The three genetic groups will be compared according to the variables obtained through ANOVA and Tukey's test.
