SUMMARY:
The population growth in urban centers brings as a consequence the increase in solid waste disposal and the need for sites prepared for the proper disposal of these wastes in order to avoid pollution and environmental degradation through the contact of highly toxic contaminating compounds with the soil and, consequently, with the water, through leachate. The correct destination of these residues happens when they are disposed of in places called sanitary landfills, projected and adequate for this purpose, reducing any possible environmental impacts on the environment. When there is no minimum adequacy of the environment with soil sealing processes and leachate channeling, this environment used to dispose of waste is called a "dump". In the brazilian territory the presence of dump sites is still very common, even after the implementation of the National Policy for Solid Waste, which determines the substitution of these sites by landfills. Thus, the following work aims to make a systematic review that, through data obtained from analysis and research of articles and other scientific papers in the period 2012 to 2022, seeks to assess the concentration of toxic metals Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb), Chromium (Cr) and Mercury (Hg) in soil and groundwater in areas of operation of dumps in the brazilian territory through the percolation of leachate, comparing them with the guideline values of maximum concentrations allowed in the brazilian legislation.
