AMAZON MEDICINAL PLANTS DESCRIBED BY BARÃO SANTA-ANNA NERY IN THE 19TH CENTURY

Ethnobotany investigates, analyzes and studies traditional information about the use of plants by the population of a community, aiming to demonstrate the benefits of using medicinal plants. Thus, historical ethnobotany seeks to understand, through historical facts, the use of plants in order to contribute to the development of science, using documents and historical works as a tool, such as the book “O País das Amazonas” from 1885. The objective of this work is to analyze the work “O País das Amazonas” by the Brazilian propagandist Barão de Santa-Anna Nery in order to inventory, retrieve and organize ethnobotanical information on useful and medicinal plants described in the book. The plant species described in the book were listed and, according to the availability of information, the scientific names were updated in the Plants of the Word, Reflora and Tropicos databases, then the medicinal use of the book was confronted with the pharmacological studies present in the PubMed and Science databases. Direct. 128 species listed with different uses, and only 37 species of medicinal use were proven through pharmacological studies. This demonstrates the importance of understanding the use of medicinal plants during the history of society so that it contributes to new studies and purposes, in addition to contributing to the dissemination of the work of a great propagandist in Brazil, rescued from Amazonian history and Brazilian literature.
