SUMMARY:

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by high blood glucose levels, caused by the lack of insulin secretion by the pancreas. Given the severity triggered by this process in the human body, it is necessary to search for alternative and innovative measures for its regulation. Some research carried out in the health area highlights the use of medicinal plants and phytochemicals as a route of innovation for treatments focused on diabetes mellitus as they are little explored resources in Brazil, both from a scientific and economic point of view, which indicates that there is great potential for new ventures and technology development in this area. The study of Microdesmia rigida (Benth.) Sothers & Prance, which belongs to the Chrysobalanaceae family and is popularly known as “oiticica”, an oiticica tree typical of riparian forests in the caatinga, will be carried out in order to investigate its potential to combat this disease, oiticica has scientific evidence showing antioxidant, anticoagulant, antimicrobial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory action. Therefore, the objective of this work is to investigate the evaluation of the in vitro and in vivo activity of the M. rigid extract, with the aim of obtaining the chemical characterization of the extract, the quantification of the levels of phenolic compounds and flavonoids, and determining the inhibition capacity against to the free radical DPPH• and ABTS•+; evaluate the inhibition capacity on the enzymes α-glucosidase and lipase, as well as analyze the acute oral toxicity of the extract in mice and the hypoglycemic activity of the M. rigida extract in diabetic mice and analyze the results obtained according to the biochemical parameters of the renal and hepatic functions in diabetic mice treated with M. rigida extract.
