Healing effect and anti-inflammatory evaluation of Piper marginatum Jaqc. essential oil as a therapeutic alternative for radiodermitis in oncologic patients
Piper marginatum Jaqc.; Essential oil; Anti-inflammatory; Healing potential; Radiodermatitis.
Piper marginatum Jaqc. belongs to the Piperaceae family, which has 14 genera and is represented in Brazil by five genera: Piper, Peperomia, Potomorphe, Ottonia and Sarcorhachis. It is an aromatic plant, found in shrub form and can grow up to 5 meters high. It is well known in traditional medicine and is used to treat various health problems including skin conditions, wound healing, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic action, urological, gastric and liver problems, among others. Radiotherapy is a treatment that uses ionizing radiation for therapeutic purposes in cancer patients. However, adverse effects can occur during treatment, including radiodermatitis, which ranges from local discomfort to mild lesions and severe ulceration. In view of the above, the aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and healing potential of the essential oil of Piper marginatum Jaqc. leaves on lesions induced by ionizing radiation in Wistar rats, with a view to finding an alternative adjuvant therapy for the treatment of radiodermatitis in oncologic patients submitted for radiotherapy.
