RESUMO:

The research deals with the school education carried out by the Franciscan Catholic Order in the Lower Amazon Region, covering some municipalities in the West of Pará, from 1907 to 1934. It is being carried out having as theoretical presuppositions the analyzes of Historical and Critical Pedagogy, is of bibliographic character. Some historical events, such as foreign immigration to the region, the Canudos War, the Catholic Romanization process, among others, will be correlated with the political, economic and social factors of the country with a direct implication in the educational configuration of the region. One of the main exponents in this process was the Franciscan Bishop Amando Bahlmann, who used his influence, intellectual formation and alignment with Brazilian republican politics to attract religious men and women to care for education through the construction and administration of schools and the exercise of teaching . The research is still under way, but already reveals some results that can be expressed: His presence was so remarkable for the educational process of the region that even after 80 years of his death is still seen in the congregation of the Immaculate Conception, and countless schools he helped build, remnants of his stubbornness in rigorously meeting his social and political obligations. Even following the norms stipulated by the Brazilian central government, to control the thinking elite of the region of the Lower Amazon, through health and education services, the contribution of the Franciscan order to the historical educational development of the region is well-known, with the unfoldings that this represents.
