RESUMO:
Based on the epistemological basis of the Historical-Cultural Theory, this research comprehends that the subject becomes humanized in the appropriation of the goods historically produced from the educational process. The visual arts, in this perspective, is an extremely complex human activity, born from the need of the subject to express and know their feelings and emotions, as well as enable the development of higher capacities, such as imagination and creation. However, what has been seen in the routines of early childhood education institutions in relation to the visual arts are ready-made activities of mere reproduction, with predefined aesthetic standards by others, which often seek to work only the child's motor development, showing a conception. compartmentalization of the human being. This research aimed to understand the challenges to make a visual arts practice based on the Historical-Cultural Theory (THC), early childhood education and, as specific objectives, characterize the visual arts activities present in the institution's routine; analyze the visual arts praxis developed in a Center for Early Childhood Education; to see how teachers understand the role of visual arts in children's development. For this, we used a training research in which six continuing education meetings were held with 12 teachers from a Municipal Center for Early Childhood Education in the city of Santarém-PA. Parallel to the training, there was the accompaniment of the teaching praxis with visual arts. Up to the present moment of this investigation it has been possible to observe some challenges for the visual arts as activities that promote the development of human capacities of children, such as: activities based on a development of biological nature that emphasize the physical motor skills; the role of children within the considered pedagogical projects; teachers' concern with what they consider “dirt” during visual arts activities; designs that emphasize homogenization; and the limited availability of materials and space organization.
