RESUMO:

Based on the epistemologic of the historical-cultural theory, this investigation comprehends that the individual is humanized as they appropriate the historically produced culture in the educational process. The visual arts in this perspective become an extremely complex human activity that arises from the individual's need to express and aknowledge their feelings and emotions, as well as enabling the development of the higher capacities, such as imaginativeness and creativity. However, what has been observed in the routines of early childhood education institutions in relation to the visual arts are mere reproductionists ready-made activities, with aesthetic standards pre-defined by others, who often seek to work only on the child's motor development, demonstrating, this way, a conception of a compartmentalized human being. This research had as it's general objective  understanding the challenges in the pedagogical practice of teachers for the effectiveness into working with visual arts in child education through the Historical-cultural Theory and, as specific objectives, to list significant aspects of the pedagogical praxis of teachers working with visual arts; to analyze how they use the institution's infrastructure to work with visual arts in this theoretical perspective; to characterize possible transformations in the teaching practice with visual arts based on a work inspired on the historical-cultural approach. For this, a training research type was  done (BRANDÃO E BORGES 2007; LONGAREZI and SILVA 2013; MIRANDA and RESENDE 2006), in which five ongoing educational training meetings were held with 12 teachers from a Municipal Center for Early Childhood Education in the municipality of Santarém-PA. Parallel to the training course, the teaching work of the participants with visual arts was monitored. In this stage of the investigation, it was possible to observe challenges on the realization of visual arts praxis as activities that promote the development of children's human capacities, such as: experiences provided based on biological nature, which mostly emphasize physical motor skills; the concept of  childhood; the teachers' concern with what they consider “mess” during visual arts activities; drawings that emphasize homogenization; the limited availability of materials and an impoverished routine. In addition, the institution's curriculum is based on commemorative dates, which reinforces the emphasis on the search for results. During the training, it was noticed that the teachers have few artistic experiences since they did not have such opportunities in their childhood. This leads directly to proposals of experiments with visual arts for children. However, hopefully, this research will assist reflections and notes into working with visual arts in early childhood education in order to promote the integral development of children.
