Faced with a situation of crisis - in the political, economic, social and educational sphere - established in Brazilian society from 2016 to 2020, the study aims to analyze the paths, dilemmas and contradictions of Democratic Management, established in legal and normative documents such as an obligation in the educational field, regarding its implementation in public schools. Its general objective is to analyze the paths, dilemmas and contradictions of Democratic Management regarding its implementation in Brazilian public schools in the period 2016-2020. The research is the result of a State of the Art study, mapping, understanding and discussing scientific production and reaching new views and positions on the subject. Indeed, as data collection techniques, the use of bibliographic research, document analysis, bibliometrics and consultation of scientific bases are used, delimiting the time frame from 2016 to 2020. For this study, five journals were elected, from Qualis A, from the Education area. From the initial data collection procedures, a search was carried out using descriptors: school management, educational management, democratic management and public school management, covering a total of 87 productions. Subsequently, the exclusion process was applied based on the reading of the title, keywords and abstracts, selecting those that are directly related to the problem, reaching 25 productions (05 from each journal). From the results obtained, still partially systematized by the analysis of the summaries of the selected productions, it was provisionally identified: the existence of dissatisfaction with the idea of democratic management in the public institution; the theoretical-conceptual change generated by redemocratization was nothing more than a fragmented experience, far from the concrete reality; management continues to be involved in authoritarian, regulatory and control relations, with clientelistic practices of access to the position, lack of autonomy and participation, exhaustion of resources and conflicting relationships between the manager and other members of the school. As for the influences of the Brazilian crisis, it weakened its implementation, made the offer of continuing education unfeasible due to increasing budget cuts, implemented new assignments to the school organization process, giving more work and less appreciation, all in line with the precariousness of the public education under an extremist right in charge of the country. However, such indications reinforce the existence of dilemmas and contradictions in the process, validating the importance of carrying out and implementing the study. (Under construction)
