SUMMARY:

This study deals with the way in which public instruction was organized in the Province of Grão Pará between 1834 and 1854. The time frame established here concerns the first two decades of decentralization promoted by the Additional Act of 1834, Which, in terms of public education, gave the Provinces the responsibility to legislate and maintain the primary and secondary levels by their own means. This a historical research that has as documentary sources the legislation of public instruction and the reports, speeches and speeches of the presidents and vice-presidents of the Province. The theoretical and methodological basis is Historical-Dialectical Materialism and whose understanding of the historical process is anchored on the contradictions and class struggles; from historical-critical pedagogy, as an educational theory, we have the contribution regarding how education should be understood in its relationship with the current mode of production in each society. In this sense, public instruction will be perceived as a product of history resulting from the relationship between humans and their current mode of production. We consider, therefore, the nature of Brazilian economy, agricultural and exporter, relying on slave labor, as well as the particular characteristics of the Province of Grão Pará, as responsible for how public instruction was seen and organized.
