LITERARY AESTHETIC EDUCATION WITH 6TH-GRADE STUDENTS:

Limits and Possibilities

Abstract

This dissertation is linked to the Study, Research, and Intervention Group in Reading, Writing, and Literature in School (LELIT) and the Professional Master's Program in Letters (PROFLETRAS). The objective was to observe how aesthetic education in school, systematically carried out through literature, can contribute to the construction of the human being in an omnilateral way. Considering the context in which it takes place, the study examined the functionality, efficiency, and diversity of this type of activity—meaning the ways of providing aesthetic experience—while exploring possibilities and limitations encountered in the development of the teaching process of literary aesthetic experience in school. The empirical-interventionist research, a participatory type of research, took place in a municipal school in the municipality of Altamira/PA. The intervention was carried out through a proposed intervention ("One Reading for Each Day") designed and implemented by the teacher/researcher in two 6th-grade classes. In this intervention, I addressed the study of literary aesthetics, seeking to provide students with exposure to literary texts and their aesthetic value in relation to the holistic formative aspect of the individual. To do so, I drew inspiration from, among others, Cândido (1970), (1995), Silva (2011), Vigotsky (2009), (2003), Suassuna (1927), and Britto (2015). The corpus of this research consisted of Portuguese language classes, the pedagogical practices themselves, recorded punctually through video, images, and diary entries (both by the teacher and the students). The research followed the assumptions of Minayo (2009) and proceeded in three stages: 1. exploratory phase; 2. fieldwork; 3. analysis and treatment of empirical and documentary material. The results of this research highlight the importance of contact with literature and the relevance of literary aesthetic experience through the study and reading of literary texts. According to Oliveira (2010), literature contributes to the child's formation in all aspects, especially in the construction of their personality, through aesthetic development and critical capacity, ensuring reflection on their own values and beliefs, as well as those of the society to which they belong. The results also point to the need for ongoing teacher training, a fundamental element for a more reflective approach to teaching.
