ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM IN QUILOMBOLA TERRITORIES IN THE AMAZON: A REPORT ON QUILOMBOLA COMMUNITIES IN SANTARÉM/PA
Keywords: Environmental racism. Amazon. Quilombola communities. Santarém territories. Environmental justice.
Environmental racism refers to the discrimination and environmental injustices faced by specific ethnic groups, resulting in disproportionate socio-economic and environmental impacts. The Amazon is a region rich in natural resources and a target of various economic interests, often leading to the predatory exploitation of these resources and environmental degradation. Historically marginalized, quilombola communities suffer even more from these environmental impacts, which directly affect their way of life, health, livelihoods, and cultural identity. In this regard, the objective of this project is to analyze the effects of environmental racism in the quilombola territories of Santarém, identifying and describing the forms of environmental racism experienced by these communities. Data collection will be conducted through semi-structured interviews with leaders from the 12 quilombola communities in Santarém. Data analysis will be done qualitatively, using content analysis techniques. It is expected that this research will contribute to expanding knowledge about the effects of environmental racism within these territories and serve as an argument for the communities themselves in defense of their rights. Additionally, the aim is to raise awareness among society and government agencies about the importance of effective actions and policies to combat environmental racism and promote environmental justice in these communities.
