RESUMO:

One of the major causes of environmental impacts in Brazil is the inadequate disposal of solid waste in controlled landfills and dumps (open-air dumping sites). On the one hand, the increase in waste generation constitutes and adds a series of problems; on the other hand, it becomes an alternative source of income due to the lack of work options, allowing the survival of many people who live by collecting recyclable solid waste. Waste pickers play an important role for the environment and society, as well as for the economy, but are exposed to risks of contamination by toxic elements and pathogens that may be present in these materials and that can cause negative effects on human health and the environment. Thus, in view of the large number of waste pickers in the Santarém landfill and the opportunity to deepen the studies on these workers, this work has the general objective of analyzing the living, working and health conditions of waste pickers in the Perema landfill, in addition to verifying the occurrence of intestinal enteroparasitosis in the participants of the research. The study is characterized as an exploratory and qualitative field research, through observation with on-site visits. To verify the living, working and health conditions of the collectors of recyclable materials, semi-structured interviews will be conducted with 40 volunteers (20 collectors and 20 non collectors), using a script of questions previously formulated with open and closed questions. In addition, 120 stool samples (three samples per participant) will be taken on non-consecutive days for the Parasitological Faecal Examination (EPF). Sample collection for examination aims to identify the presence of intestinal parasites in the studied population. It is expected that the working conditions of collectors of recyclable materials have a negative effect on the health of these workers, as well as that there is a relationship between the working conditions and life habits with the occurrence of intestinal parasitosis in this group of individuals. It is believed that this study can contribute to the understanding of the challenges of social inclusion and improvement of human and environmental well-being, and clarify the working conditions and health of this population, achieving quality of life through interventions.
