RESUMO:

Sanitation is an essential human right to promote the health and quality of life of populations, whether they live in urban, rural or traditional areas. In Brazil, the right to sanitation is guaranteed by Law 11,445 / 2007. However, individuals less favored economically and socially are exposed to situations of environmental unhealthiness, caused by the absence of basic services compatible with the local reality, in this context, research is essential to identify important factors for the formulation of public policies in rural sanitation. In view of this context, the following question was raised: How are scientific publications on the topic of sanitation distributed in rural and traditional communities in Brazil ?. In order to answer this question, the dissertation was divided into two chapters, which are in the format of articles. Chapter 1: The objective of the research was to analyze the trends and gaps in scientific publications on the theme Sanitation in traditional Brazilian communities. The scientometric methodology was used to analyze the main national metrics on the topic published between the years 2006 to 2019, the data collection occurred through a quantitative search for scientific works in the Scielo (Scientific Electronic Library Online) and Web databases Of Science (ISI Web of Knowledge). After data collection, the frequency of occurrence of the data obtained was made through the R Studio Program. The results point to a low development of research in the period analyzed, with higher publications in the years 2014 and 2018. Minas Gerais was the most studied state in the theme representing 12.2% of the total publications found, Southeast was the most investigated region with 32.2 % and Amazonia obtained 25.8% among the most present biomes in the research. The journal with the largest number of publications was Revista Engenharia Sanitária e Ambiental (19.15%). Health Sciences reached 38.30% of research participation. Regarding the impact of sanitation, the social impact obtained more studies with 68.09% of works. There was a higher incidence of research in traditional rural communities (36.17%). As for the components of the strategic rural sanitation axis, 70.21% of the surveys are involved in service management. In view of the results achieved, it is considered the importance of conducting research on sanitation in Brazil, with an emphasis on traditional communities, as the result of the research may guide public policies in the basic sanitation and environmental health sector, with sanitary and housing infrastructure projects compatible with the socio-environmental specificities of each typology of traditional peoples. Chapter 2 aims to investigate access to basic sanitation in three traditional communities of the Tapajós-Arapiuns Extractive Reserve, west of the state of Pará. It will be a qualitative and quantitative exploratory study. Data collection will take place through technical visits to communities and semi-structured interviews with residents who agree to participate and comply with the research inclusion criteria. It is hoped to identify ways of accessing sanitation in traditional communities and thus pointing out directions for the formulation of local public policies on sanitation.
