RESUMO:

Environmental education is a fundamental component of national education, and must be present at all levels of the educational process. The theme of the dissertation involves environmental education and public health, and is entitled: Environmental Education and Public Health: the case of the Municipality of Santarém, Pará, Brazil. The study site is 48 (forty-eight) neighborhoods, located in the urban area of the municipality of Santarém (PA). The guiding questions are: “What are the experiences of environmental education in neighborhoods in the urban area of the city of Santarém (PA), and how are they being worked on by the responsible public authority, in favor of the health of the human population? And, what diseases are found in the urban areas of the city of Santarém ”and how are they treated by the municipal government?

The main objective of the study is to identify how environmental education articulates in the prevention of health of residents of the urban neighborhood in Santarém (PA), since Chapter IV, of Law 17.894 of 12/15/2004, ensures in its Article 21 , Item IV, the promotion of environmental education in the municipality of Santarém (PA). And, as specific objectives, to know the knowledge of environmental education of residents of the city of Santarém; check for possible factors that may harm the health of residents of neighborhoods in the urban area of Santarém; record the relationship between environmental education actions found in the neighborhoods and public health in the municipality of Santarém. The target audiences are: 48 (forty-eight) neighborhood representatives and 01 (one) representative of the Municipal Health Secretariat. The method is comparative, with a qualitative-quantitative approach, with data analysis based on Bardin (2006). The expected results are: that the research participants can understand the importance of environmental education in the prevention of public health, that the actors that elaborate public policies for the municipality regarding environmental education and public health are effective and that they meet the health of the population ; the dissertation can contribute to research on environmental education and public health in the Amazon Region.
