The mental disorders that most affect humanity are depression and anxiety, the first choice for the treatment of these disorders are psychotropic drugs, however, they have side effects, the search for new, more effective and safer therapeutic alternatives. Therefore, this project aims to evaluate the antidepressant and anxiolytic effects of Cyperus articulatus L. essential oil in vivo in experimental models. For this, the collection of plant material, chemical characterization and chromatographic analysis of the essential oil of C. articulatus L. will be carried out, and male mice of the Swiss lineage will also be used. The research will only start after approval by the Ethics Committee on the Use of Animals - CEUA/UFOPA, where the acute toxicity test of the essential oil of C. articulatus L., the evaluation of antidepressant activities in the forced swimming and experimental models will be carried out. tail suspension, and evaluation of anxiolytic activities in the elevated plus maze and hide spheres tests, in addition to the motor activity in the open field test, which is able to assess behavioral and motor changes in rodents.
