SUMMARY:

The structure and biomass of tropical forests can be influenced by several environmental factors. Understanding how the variation of the topo-edaphic gradients, on a local scale, may be related to changes in the structure and biomass of vegetation is important to describe probable mechanisms that cause geographic patterns and distribution of tree biomass, and consequently to the modeling of carbon cycles in natural forests of the Amazon. Thus, our objective was to evaluate the influence of topographic and edaphic gradients on the structure and tree biomass above the ground of an area of Dense Ombrophiles Forest not subject to periodic flooding in the Tapajos National Forest. Do we seek to understand how the altitude and slope of the terrain, the granulometry and the concentration of the main soil macro and macronutrients affect the forest structure and biomass stocks above ground? We used ten permanent plots of one hectare, of the PPBio modulo installed, according to the RAPELD method, Tapajos National Forest at the height of km 117 of BR-163. We measured the diameter and height of the trees with inclusion level from 10 cm of DAP. Soil samples were collected in all plots, as well as altitude and slope of the terrain were measured. Through the PCA we summation the soil gradient in three main axes, which were correlated with macros and micronutrients and with topographic variables. We used linear regression to verify the relationship between dependent and independent variables. We found that soil gradient was not a good predictor of tree structure and biomass variation on a local scale. However, clay and altitude are highly correlated, and altitude influenced the variation of the basal area and biomass for the study area, with the slope determining the distribution of the number of individuals.
