SUMMARY:

The recurrent development of resistance to the various classes of antimicrobials by human and animal pathogens, causes a serious problem of inefficiency to drug treatment, generating serious worsening of public health and economic order. Thus, it is necessary the search of new natural products with antimicrobial properties in the combat to the multi-resistant bacteria as Staphylococcus aureus, responsible for several diseases, including dermatological infections (acnes, folliculitis, carbuncles, furuncles and cellulites) and other serious infections. Lapachol, a naphthoquinone extracted from ipê, is a potential candidate for application as an antibiotic, but it has limitations of oral use because it has low bioavailability and promotes serious side effects. However, the development of new pharmaceutical forms with modified delivery systems (DDS) establish more efficient therapeutic alternatives for the administration of drugs. Among DDS, liquid crystals stand out for generating highly organized systems, forming mesophases that promote stability to extrinsic factors, resistance to erosion by organic fluids and easily modulated viscosity, allowing the sustained release of drugs. Thus, the objective of this study is to develop a sustained release system based on Murumuru butter (Astrocaryum murumuru), from lapachol extracted from Handroanthus serratifolius (yellow ipê), for the treatment of skin infections by S. aureus. For this, lapachol will be extracted from yellow ipê wood residues and outlined in a topical formulation. The proposed pharmaceutical form will be subjected to in vitro release tests, evaluation of antibiotic action against the test micro-organism and will have its method validated so that it can be applied safely and reliably. In addition, this will be the first study to produce a a liquid crystal system of lapachol with topical antibiotic purpose.
