Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a fungal infection caused by species of the genus Candida, with a high prevalence among women. Resistance to conventional antifungals and the side effects associated with these medications highlight the constant need to seek efficient and safe therapeutic alternatives. Pectis elongata essential oil (EOPe), rich in citral, has known antifungal activity. However, the incorporation of essential oils into pharmaceutical formulations faces challenges due to volatility and solubility. This study proposes the development of a topical formulation using OEPe as an active ingredient with anti-Candida potential and murumuru butter as a carrier system, aiming at the protection and sustained release of the active compounds present in OEPe for the treatment of VVC. The research highlights the importance of liquid-crystalline formulations, focusing on the choice of natural raw materials, such as murumuru, to promote efficacy, safety, and stability in the developed formulation.
