SUMMARY:

The present study is part of the doctoral research and proposes to present an overview of the Amazon region and its various realities, the socioeconomic and educational context and its challenges. It highlights some historical aspects about the emergence of a Catholic confessional school institution in Santarém/PA, one of the main municipalities that make up the Brazilian Amazon and how this influenced the historical context and development of the region. It deals with the memory and history of the Women's Orphanage in the municipality, the context of its idealization and construction, as well as its importance in the historical context of the time and the search for understanding the educational process through the Normal Course and Teaching aimed at a female audience and the contributions to education in the Amazon (west region of Pará) noticeable in the life stories of the women who were part of the history of this place in the early 20th century. It is a research that uses oral history, intertwined with documentary contributions, bibliographic review, such as books, articles, personal documents and photographs. Through these sources it is possible to apprehend the widespread practices and the female schooling process that took place in the school. Considers Dialectical Historical Materialism as essential for the analysis and understanding of history and its contradictions. The work reveals the strong presence of the missionary action of the Catholic Church, more precisely of the Franciscan friars of German and North American origin in the lower Amazon region and their influence in the organization of formative teaching practices for the formation and education of women. It is concluded from the initial data of the research that female education is, therefore, a striking factor in contemporary society and, although they have been jettisoned from the educational process for centuries, in addition to the late entry into schooling and an instruction based on catechetical training and from home in the colonial mold, managed to build their emancipatory stories from the resistance in spaces dominated by the male presence and, thus, contribute to the educational process in the region.
