SUMMARY:

Climate change has impacted humanity and other living beings on planet Earth. Floods, desertification, cyclones, droughts, fires, cold and heat waves, tornadoes, forest fires are climatic events of natural or anthropogenic origin that have intensified and caused destruction, financial losses and deaths. Higher education institutions must fulfill their social role by addressing climate change in their curricula. Thus, the Instituto Esperança Superior (IESPES) proposed the 1.5º C Program in its extension curricularization in 2023. In view of the above, it is relevant to analyze the 1.5º C Program in the IESPES extension curricularization and its impact on human formation of those involved in this process. The specific objectives are: reporting the process of creation, implementation and implementation of the 1.5º C Program in the curricularization of extension at IESPES; analyze the perception of IESPES students, teachers and course coordinators regarding the socio-environmental role of universities in adapting and mitigating climate change; identify and analyze projects integrated into the extension program to be developed in the communities and/or neighborhoods participating in the IESPES extension curriculum; create and install the Extension Group for Reflective Training in Favor of the Climate – GEFRAFC, in order to provide critical-reflective discussion on climate change and coresponsibility with the Earth's climate; and analyze the challenges and contributions of the 1.5º C Program according to the perception of GEFRAFC participants, with regard to climate change. The investigation has a qualitative-quantitative approach, with bibliographical, documentary and empirical research. It is an ethnographic case study with the educational community of IESPES and representatives of society who participate in the 1.5 º C program in carrying out participatory action research (PAP), with the installation of the Extension Group for Reflective Training in Favor of the Climate – GEFRAFC. The instruments are the questionnaire (Climate -U), field diary, photographic records and interview. In relation to the results, we hope to highlight the impacts and challenges of the 1.5º C Program on the integral human formation of these participants and show the role of HEIs in combating climate change.
